09.10.2015, SHILLONG: Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment Krishan Pal Gurjar on Thursday said the Centre was coming up with a unique identity card (ID) for persons with disabilities (PWDs) and that a massive survey would be carried out to ensure its successful implementation.
"We will implement the unique identity card for all persons with disabilities next year," Gurjar said while addressing a function held at the Bethany Society here on Thursday.
He said the identity card would allow PWDs to access different schemes of the government.
The minister has also directed all states, including Meghalaya, to ensure that Disabilities Certificates are issued to each and every person with a disability.
"All states should ensure that not a single PWD is left out," Gurjar emphasized.
Announcing that the Centre would soon come out with a new bill, he said, "We plan to increase the number of categories of PWDs from 7 to 19 ...Autism is one of them."
The Union minister also distributed digital hearing aids, books, teaching and learning kits and laptops worth up to Rs 60 lakhs to over 200 PWDs.
In his speech, secretary to the Union ministry of social justice and empowerment, Lov Verma said the Centre would also provide skill training to one lakh PWDs in the country. He also urged the schools to avail the scholarship scheme offered by the Government of India.
State urban affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said, "We are grateful to the ministry of social justice and empowerment and department of empowerment of persons with disabilities for their various schemes from time to time which are being given to our state".
She added that the state government had set up diagnostic centres in four districts to help hearing impaired infants and children to acquire necessary skills to prepare for regular schooling.
